Wheres the Weirdest Place Youve Talked Books One of the very best things about being a Book Person is meeting other Book PeopleI am firmly convinced that book people are the best people, even if I do hate talking to them on planes. Whether we read the same  books or not, all of us who love  books share a common language. We know what it means to experience the world through the lens of literature and  to make sense of our experiences by  reading. When theres no other obvious conversation topic available, we always have  books to fall back on. And so I find myself talking about  books in strange situations. Not just at dinner parties and my husbands work functions. Not just in line at the post office or with the cute guy at the gym who asks about my  Fahrenheit 451 tattoo. Oh no, that would be far too normal. The more awkward and uncomfortable the situation, the more likely I am to start talking about  books. And when I wish we could just be silent and not talk about anything, but talking seems to be required? You guessed it, Im going to  books. A selection of weird places and situations in which Ive talked about  books recently: During my annual visit to the Lady Doctor. This one happens every year. I love my Lady Doctor, and I appreciate that she always remembers what I do and takes time to ask what Im  reading. But really! Does anything say, Lets try to pretend like everything is cool and youre not wearing a paper gown while I touch your privatest private parts like, So, read any good books lately? The universe seems to conspire to make this annual conversation hilarious, as two years ago the book I was  reading at the time was a gynecologists memoir called Whats Up Down There?, and this year it was a collection of essays about Judy Blume. Achievement unlocked: talk about Are You There God, Its Me, Margaret? with a doctor who specializes in periods. At a funeral. When my grandfather passed away a few years ago (he was 95 and had lived quite a life), I found myself in a Holiday Inn in a small town in Georgia that is so far south its practically in Florida. It was the middle of the summer, and even the mosquitoes had sunburns. During the visitation (southern Methodists dont call it a wake), I discovered that my mother, being the proud mama that she is, had told the funeral director and a bunch of my grandparents friends about my job. So there I stood, shaking hands with strangers and accepting condolencesand talking about  books. Through a dressing room door at Nordstrom.  I do not like shopping for clothes. Its time consuming, and big stores have so many choices that I never know where to start, and Im short and hard to fit, and the whole experience is generally frustrating and what Charles Barkley would call turrible. But having someone else do the shopping so all I have to do is try on clothes? Amazing. Nordstrom has a (free!) personal shopper service I discovered a few years ago, and whenever I go now, I talk about  books with the shopper while she hangs out on the other side of the door. It distracts me from the million little things I find annoying about trying on clothes, and it helps her understand exactly how nerdy I am so she wont try to put me in that 80s-style-yet-somehow-fashion-forward splatter painted blazer with shoulder pads again. I am not that cool, and now she knows. In more Uber cars than I can count.  Okay, talking  books with a driver may not seem that unusual, but you should know that I make it a mission in life to space out while riding in taxis, collect my thoughts, enjoy the silence (when I can get it), and not talk. Im not rude, I just dont want to chat. But something happens when I use the Uber car service. I cant resist talking to the drivers, usually about how awesome Uber is (you request a car from an app on your phone, and then it appears like magic, then they charge your credit card for the ride and the tip, and you never have to open your wallet), and we always make our way around to, So, what do you do? And from there its all  books all the time, baby. During a bikini wax.  Something about baring my parts makes me want to bare my soul. Or maybe being physically naked makes it easier to be emotionally naked. Who knows. But there I lay, capitulating to contemporary societys impossible standards of feminine beauty, talking to the aesthetician about Justin Cronins The Passage. And then about Colson Whiteheads Zone One. And then we took a brief detour onto reality TV and the Doomsday Preppers series (because zombies). We came full circle with, Did you read Fifty Shades of Grey? Yes, honey. Yes I did. So you know its gonna take more than a little wax-and-chat to make me uncomfortable. Ive shown you mine, readers, now its your turn. When watching a film you see the same structure going on where you see the a basic storyline heading towards the plot in the middle and then unveiling the huge climax at the end. Typically you see a variation within the narrative structure it al depending on the length of the film as well as the genre. Hollywood is best known to keep their films short about an hour to two hours long but enticing enough where it gives you exactly what you need to know in a short amount of time.When it comes to the textual analysis of it all it all depends on how the script is written not only that but how the script is played out in the film. In the textual analysis of a film you have to really pay attention to the environment during the film. You have to pay attention to the race in the film, the themes throughout the film and the gender roles played in the film. In the movie Crash we see many pairs where they each have their own different points of views on things and often bump heads due to their different opinions. When watching the film Crash you see the complete opposite of what you are used to and see that the film starts off in the middle of the plot and later on starts revealing the events that lead to the plot. For example, in the beginning you see different cultures interacting with each other on a certain level being very cautious about what a person does. You can immediately see the distinction between the different social and racial class. â€Å"Every tooth in a man’s head is more valuable than a diamond,† (Miguel de Cervantes, Don Quixote, 1605). Living by this philosophy, I’ve decided that I want to become a dentist. When I made this decision, I knew absolutely nothing about what it was like to be a dentist, and the numerous jobs I could do as one. I thought that every dentist did the same thing, but boy was I wrong. Over the fifteen plus hours I spent shadowing my mentor, Dr. Victor Nitu, I learnt a lot of new stuff that has helped me narrow down what exactly I want to do as a dentist in the future. There are seven possible jobs I will be covering, and each entail a different pay, amount of schooling needed, and job responsibilities. By 1912, Jean Arp had become associated with the Blaue Reiter, or Blue Rider, a group of Expressionist artists in Munich, where he exhibited ?semi-figurative? drawings and became well-acquainted with fellow artist Wassily Kandinsky. In 1913, he exhibited with another group of Expressionists at the first Hebrstsalon--or Autumn Salon, an art exhibition--in Berlin. Aware of the developments within the French avant-garde through his contacts with such artists as Apollinaire, Max Jacob and Sonia and Robert Delaunay in 1914, Arp presented his first abstracts and paper cutouts in Z?rich in 1915 and arranged his first shallow wooden reliefs and compositions of string nailed to canvas. In 1915, the art of Jean Arp consisted of abstract and angularly patterned tapestries and drawings, but soon matured as he became the co-founder of the revolutionary Dadaist school of artists in Z?rich, Switzerland with Tristan Tzara and Hugo Ball. His familiar abstract and curvilinear forms debuted in 1917, and in 1919 he continued his Dadaist portrayals with Ernst in Cologne before participating in the Berlin Dada exhibition of 1920. This approach focuses on the behavior of leaders and the way they â€Å"did† and accomplished tasks. Different patterns of behavior were grouped together and labeled as styles. This became a very popular activity within management training – perhaps the best known being Blake and Mouton’s Managerial Grid (1964; 1978)† (Doyle Smith, 2011). The four main styles in regard to the behavioral approach research by Doyle Smith 2011 are: concern for the task, concern for the people, directive leadership and participative leadership. Personal example of use of this leadership approach Looking at all five different approaches of leadership styles, the behavioral approach is the one approach I am personally most familiar with. Other than traits of people, behavior can be learned. The learning capability of this approach is the biggest advantage and strengths present. A person can change behaviors and learn new ones which lead directly into the weaknesses of this approach. It is a not an easy task to change behavior, especially if a person is not interested in change. This is approach seems to best fit my personal leadership approach. Looking back at my previous employment as a financial associate at Boone County National Bank, I can relate to the definition of the behavioral approach. I was always concerned about given tasks and people. My behavior influenced others to follow and start behaving the same way I did. A great example is the way I used to deal with my customers. I was friendly, concerned with their business and ensured that they were well taken care of. By being concerned and open minded, I completed sales and other branch needed tasks without pushing or forcing myself on someone. With a combination of traits and behavior me and my colleagues made a great team and were able to complete all tasks on time, efficiently and effectively as well as satisfy all of our customers and managers. Looking back over the accomplishments of the branch I worked in as well as my personal accomplishments, I feel proud of what I have helped accomplish. Conclusion Understanding the difference between effective management and effective leadership is important. Leaders are not always born leaders; they can be formed into leaders if that is what they want. All five leadership approaches combined would form the perfect leader but each individual has special traits and behaviors that can make one into a leader. However, the wisest course is to master them yourself. For fun, I did a search for the incorrect version of nine of the ten. I didn’t bother with Number 7 because both its and it’s are valid spellings. The number of hits for the misspellings is shown in parentheses. Some refer to intentional misspellings on English sites like this one, but not all. 1. argument (arguement 730,000) The verb is argue, but the noun is argument. 2. calendar (calender 29,600,000)   The register on which you schedule your appointments is spelled calendar. Yes, there is a specialized term spelled calender that refers to paper production, but I doubt that it accounts for millions of uses. 3. cemetery (cemetary185,000,000) There are three e’s in cemetery. Nary an a in sight. 4. definite (definate 539,000) Think, finite, infinite, infinity. Look at all those i’s. No a’s anywhere in definite. 5. finally (finaly 1,450,000) The adjective is final. The adverb is finally. Double that l in finally. 6. forty (fourty 783,000)   One less than five is spelled four. One more than thirty-nine is spelled forty. 7. its (possessive adjective) The problem with this habitual misspelling is that both its and it’s are English spellings. It’s is a contraction of the words â€Å"It is.† Its is a possessive adjective, like his. The best advice is to spell out â€Å"it is† when that is your meaning. You cannot rely on grammar/spell checkers to catch this one. Indeed, Word often advises me to write â€Å"it’s† when the context calls for its. 8. separate (seperate 31,700,000)   Take the word by syllables: sep-a-rate. Yes, we pronounce it [sep-uh-ret], but we spell it sep-a-rate. Look for â€Å"a rat† in sep.a.rat.e. 9. tragedy (tradgedy 212,000) The g in tragedy is soft. The e makes the g soft.
